A Note from the Art Room: Square 1 Art
Each South student has already created a unique masterpiece on a square piece of paper, and was mailed to Square 1 Art. Their artwork has arrived back and is being sent home with 20 free stickers! I know there have been many fundraisers going on so please don’t feel any pressure, but if you would like to purchase any items with your child’s artwork on it this has been a wonderful way for the art room to purchase items non-consumable items such as books, drying racks and printmaking tools that we might not otherwise have been able to purchase. Items that you purchase should arrive just in time for the holidays! Check out the Square 1 Art website for a preview of items available!  www.square1art.com  All the information you need to log on is in the packet that is being sent home today.

What I love about Square 1 Art is that no matter what, your child is able to take home free stickers! Yay!

Welcome Back!

The South Elementary art blog has been on hiatus for two years but we are back in action! So much has happened in the last two years. We moved buildings, I started my masters degree in special education, and we WON the student art division of Art Prize last year!!!! Oh boy, have we been busy! Stay tuned to what we will be working on this year. Here is the art handout for the open house on August 21st for kinder and pre-k and August 22nd for 1st-5th grade.

Welcome the Art Room
About Mrs. Nienhouse:
This is my 12th year of teaching art! My husband and I have two beautiful daughters (twins- Scarlett and Violette)
that will be six years old in a few months. Our family loves to spend time on Mackinac Island and the craziest thing
I have ever done was going skydiving! I am currently working on my masters degree in Special Education at Grand
Valley State University. When I’m not too busy, I love to make my own art, read, and relax with my family. I can’t
wait to start creating some new art projects with all my South students!

Classroom Expectations:
In art we have three main expectations for all students:
• Be safe.
• Be responsible.
• Be respectful.

THE ART CURRICULUM:
Throughout the year, many projects will be focused on giving children experiences with each of the
art elements of line, shape, color, form, texture, value, and space. Upper grade levels
also focus on art principles such as pattern, movement, balance, emphasis, unity, and movement.  All
Hudsonville art teachers also have an annual rotating cultural focus for the year. This year, students will be
able to learn about and create art inspired by Australia.

Art history is also a large component of our curriculum. Each grade level focuses on learning about the
lives and work of historical as well as some contemporary artists. This year, each grade will be learning about
the following artists:

Kindergarten: Piet Mondrian, Eric Carle
1st Grade: Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso
2nd Grade: Henri Matisse, Faith Ringgold, Vincent Van Gogh
3rd Grade: Leonardo DaVinci, Jackson Pollock, George Rodrigue
4th Grade: Wassilly Kandinsky, Pablo Picasso, Wayne Thiebaud
5th Grade: Salvador Dali, Georgia O’Keeffe, Friedrich Hundertwasser

Finally, we work to give each grade level an experience with a variety of materials and art genre. Some
examples include: portraits, landscapes, cityscapes, architecture, realism, abstraction,
and figure drawing.
Please check out our website for updates on what’s happening in the art room!

Thank you!
